New partnership with Luma Health automates Vidscrip sharing through EMR

There is no shortage of health information online. But none of it can replace the words of your own doctor, delivered at just the right time. For most patients, access to that level of engagement is hard to come by.

We plan to fix that problem with our new partnership with San Francisco based Luma Health. Healthcare providers who use Vidscrip to record answers to common questions can now have those videos automatically delivered to patients via Luma’s text message and HIPAA-compliant chat platform.

The Luma Health platform uses triggers in the EMR to automate delivery of Vidscrips to patients at just the right moment in a care episode. Whether it’s GI prep instructions the night before a colonoscopy, medication reminders throughout a course of expensive biologics, or a simple reminder about the importance of an annual flu shot, video-based engagement from a patient’s own care team, delivered at just the right time, can have a significant impact on practice efficiency, patient satisfaction, and health outcomes.

The Internet Is A Medical Device.  Why Aren’t We Treating It Like One?

You’re having a kidney transplant.  It’s a scary journey, and access to the specialists treating you is critical to your health outcome. That’s why your doctor used Vidscrip to make a series of videos that help you manage your surgical journey (yes, we have a customer – a globally recognized transplant center – who is doing this).  

Now it’s the night before surgery. You receive a text message with a link to a video called, “Preparing For Tomorrow’s Surgery”. You tap on the link, but nothing happens. What you don’t realize is a company paid your internet service provider (ISP) to “throttle” video streamed by services other than theirs. What should have been a reassuring and helpful online encounter with your care team has now increased your anxiety at just the wrong time.

That is the type of looming, real-world consequence we face with the recent repeal of the FCC’s Net Neutrality rules. Just one small example of how lives are going to be impacted by this misguided decision.

With a quick internet search you can learn of myriad ways the internet is used to facilitate health, and healthcare. From tele-stroke programs that connect specialists to remote patients, to online patient communities, to video-based health education, the internet is the most used “medical device” in the world.

By repealing Net Neutrality our government is playing a dangerous game with the internet. Telecom companies and their lobbyists have successfully convinced some lawmakers that access to information and services should be controlled by them, not by consumers and innovators.

At Vidscrip we’ve chosen to take a stand. We urge Minnesota’s leaders from both parties, at the state and federal levels, to work together to protect the internet just like you’ve worked together to protect and grow the medical device industry here in Minnesota. Make no mistake, the internet is the most important medical device we have. Let’s start treating it that way.

After a successful pilot in knee replacement, our team is taking on orthopedics

Orthopedic surgeons will tell you that they repeat themselves with patients over-and-over, day-after-day.  They use the same analogies and word pictures, describe the same procedures, and educate patients on the same recovery requirements.  However, studies show that patients forget much (up to 80%) of what they learn at the point-of-care.  Obviously, these doctor/patient encounters are extremely perishable and inefficient.  

So why does this matter?  

Orthopedic surgeons are constantly being asked to do more with less.  Bundled payment programs and other pressures on reimbursement means that the practice inefficiencies of the past must finally be dealt with.  Add patient satisfaction and health outcomes to the mix, there are a lot of clinical and financial reasons to address this problem.

That’s why ConforMIS and Vidscrip have teamed up to improve practice efficiency, patient satisfaction and health outcomes in joint replacement practices.  A module embedded in the Vidscrip platform covers all of the questions patients need answered as they navigate their surgical journey.  The Vidscrip software guides surgeons through the process of recording their own answers the questions.  Once recorded, those answers can be automatically shared with patients at key moments across the episode-of-care.  

In a pilot program initiated in November, 2017, 34 surgeons completed the knee replacement module which includes answers to 100 commonly asked questions about knee replacement surgery.  The pilot has resulted in over 3,000 videos recorded, and 12,000 patient views.  

Care providers are accustomed to conveying large amounts of information to patients which can be challenging for them and their families to absorb in the moment, and even harder to retain after the fact,” said Greg Martin, MD, a board certified orthopedic surgeon with advanced fellowship training in reconstructive surgery of the hip and knee from Harvard Medical School. “I have recorded Vidscrips to help my patients better understand my preoperative plan, prepare for surgery, and manage their post-operative care. I am already seeing my patients coming into their first visit far more informed with Vidscrips  provided by me and my staff.”

Vidscrip expands partnership to advance asthma and allergy patient education

Healthcare providers nationwide will use the vidscrip digital health platform to improve outcomes for asthma patients of all ages
